The Art of Neighboring

When Jesus said, “Love your neighbor” could he actually mean our physical neighbor?
As your pastor, I have led you into our city to our non-profits, prisons, military bases, other faith-based organization and government agencies. Why?  Because God plants churches to reach cities. Yet, despite all the incredible stories we have garnered together these past nine years, I regret that I have not led us to the people who live literally yards from our front door.
The challenge by my friend, Dave Runyon, to simple fill out the names of my closest eight neighbors on the block map below has bothered me. Before this conversation, I could only fill out two boxes.
So we begin 2018 focusing on those folks who live just a few steps from our homes. It is the right place to start, the right thing to do, and the right time to do. In 2018, let’s all learn The Art of Good Neighboring.

My First Week as Good Neighbor

Well, we heard Dave last week. We repented publicly. This is another week. Now what? I know enough about repentance to know that is requires two actions. To repent means "to turn away" and "to turn toward." We turn away from the places that brought us astray and turn toward the place we should go. So what do I do? I have this block map in hand and it has two of the eight boxes empty. Guess I've got to fill in the other boxes. I will tell you on Sunday how it went as I learned the names of my own neighbors.
