Ch-ch-changes…

I am maturing. The beard is graying, the body is breaking, the joints are creaking, and I have the new innate ability to “somehow” injure myself in my sleep. My kids are grown and are beginning to have kids of their own, while desiring less and less of dad’s advice. To make things worse, last week I was at a local retailer and the counter girl said; “You look like you qualify for the senior discount!” Really? Did she really just go there? She did. Whether I want to face the reality of stepping into the latter stages of my life or not, it is here and is calling to be embraced.

A wise man once said: “There are three things that are certain in life: death, taxes and change. You can’t avoid change, it’s mandatory, progress however is optional.”

As I do my best to warm up to the idea of aging, and all the “changes” that come with it, I am beginning to discover the beauty within it. With the arrival of a new granddaughter, time with family has become highly valued and precious. I have found that holding hands with my wife (of 28 yrs., 33 yrs. together) is no longer a simple interlocking of fingers but a true sign of my deep affection for her. Seeing the passing of my biological father, as well as my step father, in recent years, has caused me to be more intentional in letting people know how much I love and appreciate them. God is changing my heart as I mature, that is for sure.

I do not know if there is a secret to aging gracefully, but one thing I do know is that change is coming for each of us, and how we choose to deal with that change will leave a lasting impact on all those around us.
