The First noel was first appeared in it's oral form in the 18th century. It was originally compiled for the first time in 1823 by a man named Davies Gilbert. This song in it's modern form has 6 verses. The first one deals with the story of the shepherds. The next four tell the story of the wise men. The last verse deals with Christ's redemptive work on the cross. Each verse ends with 4 repeated "Noels" and a subsequent "Born is the King of Israel." The word Noel is a french word that means Christmas and comes from a latin word that means birth. The repeated Noels, signify the spreading of the good news of Christs birth, the birth of the King of Israel.
