Calling stories are widely seen throughout the Scriptures. We read about the calling of Noah, Abram, Moses, Samson, Saul, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Jonah and in the New Testament we read about the callings of Mary, Joseph, the Apostles and Paul. I find it odd that we meet most of the main characters in the Bible not at their “salvation” moment, but at their “calling” one. Each of these characters we meet not when they say, “Yes” to Heaven, but when they say, “Yes” to Earth. It appears to me that Biblical writers are more concerned about this secondary moment of faith rather than any initiating moment into the faith. This Sunday, we look at the calling of the Magi. These foreigners were divinely drafted into the Christmas story. Their journey is not unlike our own.
